Andhra HC quashes appointment of 4 RTI Commissioners
The Division bench of Andhra Pradesh High Court has quashed appointment of 4 RTI State Information Commissioners. The appointment of 8 such Commissioners had been challenged in 2 Writ Petitions, the first filed by India Against Corruption's Co-Convenor (RTI) Chandrakant J Karira and the other by an aggrieved legal professional Padmanaviah. The decision today in Mr. Padmanaviah's case was delivered by the DB of Chief Justice Kalyan Jyothi SenGupta and Justice K.C. Bhan and also directed the state government to make fresh appointments within six weeks as per Right to Information Act (RTI).
The petitioners had contending that these four Commissioners are active in politics.
The state government had appointed V Venkateswarlu, Imtiyaz Ahmed, Vijaya Nirmala and Tantya Kumari as Commissioners in January 2012. The decision in C.J Karira's case is still reserved and covers the remaining 4 Information Commissioners appointed last year
